Underreporting of COVID-19 Case Counts in the Context of the Omicron Variant

COVID-19

25 Dec 2021

Please interpret the data in our recent data reports with caution as case information is underreported.

Following the identification of the Omicron variant in Ontario in November 2021, it has quickly become the dominant strain of COVID-19 in the province. The Omicron variant is more transmissible than previous variants and we are seeing a significant increase in case numbers in the province

As a result of increased cases, the demand for diagnostic testing has significantly increased. This has caused challenges for some people with symptoms or who have been in close contact with someone with COVID-19 to be able to access testing. Further, in the absence of access to confirmatory PCR testing following a positive rapid antigen test result, data on these cases may not be accounted for in the case numbers.
